Google's Core Web Vitals are often treated as a purely technical concern — something for developers to optimize, measured by lighthouse scores, and disconnected from design decisions. That framing misses the point entirely.

Core Web Vitals measure user experience. LCP measures whether your page feels fast. INP measures whether your page feels responsive. CLS measures whether your page feels stable. When these metrics fail, users don't think "the Largest Contentful Paint exceeded 2.5 seconds." They think "this site is slow" — and they leave.

What it measures: The time it takes for the largest visible content element (typically a hero image, heading, or video thumbnail) to render on screen.
What users feel: "Is this page loading or not?"

LCP captures the moment when a user perceives the page as "loaded." Before this point, the user is staring at a blank or partially rendered screen, uncertain whether the page is working.

Thresholds:

  • Good: ≤ 2.5 seconds
  • Needs Improvement: 2.5 – 4.0 seconds
  • Poor: > 4.0 seconds

  • Good: ≤ 0.1
  • Needs Improvement: 0.1 – 0.25
  • Poor: > 0.25

Step 2: Identify the Worst Pages

Not all pages need the same attention. Prioritize:

  1. Pages with the highest traffic (homepage, top landing pages)

  • Medium impact, low effort: Preconnect to third-party origins, defer non-critical JavaScript
  • Address last: Complex architectural changes (SSR, edge rendering, service workers)

Step 5: Monitor After Changes

Beyond the Metrics: Perceived Performance

Core Web Vitals measure technical performance, but user perception of speed can diverge from the numbers. Techniques that improve perceived performance without changing actual metrics:

  • Skeleton screens: Show the page structure immediately with placeholder shapes. Users perceive this as faster than a blank screen, even if actual content arrives at the same time.
  • Progressive loading: Load and display content in priority order — text first, then images, then interactive elements.
  • Optimistic UI: For interactions (likes, saves, form submissions), update the UI immediately and sync with the server in the background.
  • Progress indicators: For actions that genuinely take time, a progress bar or spinner reduces perceived wait time by up to 40%.
  • Instant navigation: Pre-fetch likely next pages on hover (or viewport proximity) so transitions feel instant.

These techniques complement CWV optimization — they do not replace it. A skeleton screen on a 6-second LCP page is better than a blank screen, but it is still a slow page.
